Hande Erçel is stepping into one of the most challenging roles of her career. The Turkish star will lead Diaspora, an upcoming international drama about a widowed mother who moves to Germany in search of a better life, only to find herself fighting prejudice, false accusations, and a battle for justice. Directed by acclaimed Iranian filmmaker Nader Saeivar, the film promises a powerful story of survival, dignity, and the struggles immigrants face in unfamiliar surroundings.
Set entirely in Berlin, Germany, Diaspora is expected to begin filming in early 2027. The multilingual production will bring together Turkish and German talent, marking another international step in Erçel’s acting career.
Hande Erçel to Play a Turkish Mother Fighting for Justice
Erçel will portray Merve, an educated, middle-class Turkish woman whose life changes dramatically after her husband dies in Turkey. Hoping to rebuild her future, she moves to Germany with her 12-year-old son.
Merve finds work at a language school run by a German family expecting their second child. However, her hopes for a fresh start are shaken when she experiences inappropriate physical contact from the family’s 15-year-old son, Luca.
When the behaviour happens again, Merve reports it to the boy’s father. Instead of believing her, the family rejects her account and turns the accusations against her. She becomes the target of slander and must fight to protect her reputation.
As a widowed immigrant raising a child alone, Merve faces a difficult struggle against social prejudice and a legal system in which she must prove her innocence. Her fight for justice forms the emotional centre of Diaspora.
Moritz Bleibtreu Joins the Cast
German actor Moritz Bleibtreu has also joined the film, playing the father of the family at the centre of Merve’s story. The production team expects to announce additional international cast members in the coming weeks.
The team will film the entire production in Berlin, with dialogue in German, English, and Turkish. Erçel plans to travel to the German capital about a month before filming begins to develop her character, train in the languages, and rehearse her scenes.
Who Is Directing Diaspora?
Nader Saeivar, an Iranian filmmaker based in Berlin, is writing and directing the drama. He is internationally recognised for his collaborations with acclaimed director Jafar Panahi.
Saeivar and Panahi shared an Academy Award nomination for Original Screenplay for It Was Just an Accident, which won the Palme d’Or at the 2025 Cannes Film Festival. Saeivar’s directing credits also include No End (2022), The Witness (2024), and Hijamat (2026).
Migration and the experiences of Turkish communities in Berlin have featured in Saeivar’s earlier work. With Diaspora, he aims to explore the complicated relationship between Eastern and Western societies, highlighting cultural misunderstandings, social inequality, and the prejudices immigrants can encounter.
In his statement about the film, Saeivar emphasised that people who move west in search of peace and a better life may still face barriers that undermine their dignity. He believes genuine coexistence requires empathy and mutual understanding rather than superficial tolerance or cultural superiority.
Who Is Producing the Film?
Said Nur Akkus of Berlin-based Arthood Films and Emre Oskay of Istanbul-based Sky Films are producing Diaspora.
The partnership brings together the German and Turkish film industries for a story that reflects the experiences of people navigating different cultures. Its Berlin setting and multilingual dialogue further reinforce the production’s international character.
What Does Diaspora Mean for Hande Erçel’s Career?
Erçel has gained international recognition through popular Turkish series such as Aşk Laftan Anlamaz and Sen Çal Kapımı. Her screen credits also include Intoxicated by Love and the Netflix romantic film Chasing the Wind.
With Diaspora, she will take on a demanding dramatic role that moves beyond the romantic stories associated with much of her previous work. The character of Merve will allow her to explore themes of grief, motherhood, discrimination, and resilience while working with an international creative team.
When Will Diaspora Be Released?
The production team plans to begin filming in Berlin in early 2027, but officials have not yet announced an exact start date or release date. The team expects to reveal additional casting details as the project progresses.
With Saeivar directing and Bleibtreu joining Erçel, Diaspora is shaping up to be a notable addition to the actress’s filmography. Its focus on immigration, social prejudice, and the fight for justice could make it one of her most thought-provoking projects yet.
