A missing girlfriend, an old family recipe and a garden shed full of strange experiments do not sound like the usual ingredients for a streaming comedy. Small Prophets, however, turns those elements into a quietly offbeat mystery with a distinctly British sense of humor. Created, written and directed by Mackenzie Crook, the six-episode series follows Michael Sleep, a DIY-store worker whose life has remained suspended since Clea disappeared seven years ago.
The official Apple TV trailer introduces a world where grief, deadpan comedy and alchemy sit surprisingly close together. Rather than presenting magic as a grand fantasy spectacle, Small Prophets places it inside ordinary suburban life. That contrast gives the series its central appeal: the impossible arrives in a setting that feels familiar, practical and slightly worn around the edges.
Small Prophets Trailer: A Mystery Built Around Hope
Michael has spent years waiting for an answer about Clea. According to Apple TV, his father Brian eventually gives him an old recipe involving rainwater, horse manure and alchemy. Michael follows the instructions and attempts to create homunculi, magical spirits capable of predicting the future.
That premise gives the trailer a useful balance of mystery and comedy. The question is not simply whether the supernatural experiment will work. Michael wants to know whether Clea is still part of his future. The magical idea therefore grows out of a very human problem: the difficulty of moving forward when the past never received a proper ending.
The trailer also suggests that the series will not isolate Michael inside his own search. His co-worker Kacey becomes an important ally, while manager Gordon and curious neighbors add pressure to an increasingly strange situation.
Mackenzie Crook Brings an Unusual Comic World to Apple TV
Crook is best known for creating and starring in Detectorists, and Small Prophets carries a similarly understated interest in ordinary people and unexpected possibilities. Here, he takes on multiple creative roles as creator, writer and director.
That authorship matters because the premise could easily become broad fantasy comedy. Instead, the available footage points toward something more restrained. The visual language mixes recognizable streets, a modest DIY store and a garden shed with the unsettling presence of homemade prophetic creatures.
Apple TV says the series was filmed and set in and around Manchester. That location is more than background decoration. The northern setting helps preserve the grounded character of the story, allowing the supernatural elements to feel like intrusions into everyday life rather than a separate fantasy universe.
Pearce Quigley Leads a Strong Ensemble
Pearce Quigley plays Michael Sleep, the central figure whose search for Clea drives the story. Lauren Patel plays Kacey, while Sir Michael Palin appears as Michael’s father Brian. The ensemble also includes Crook, Sophie Willan, Jon Pointing and Paul Kaye.
The casting creates an interesting mixture of established comic performers and newer faces. Palin, in particular, brings a long history of British comedy to a story that seems more interested in warmth and character than conventional sitcom mechanics. Apple TV’s official announcement confirms that the first season contains six episodes.
For viewers looking for a British comedy series with a mystery element, that combination is worth noting. Small Prophets is not built around a conventional detective investigation. Its central puzzle is emotional as much as supernatural, and the trailer keeps the relationship between the missing Clea and Michael’s strange experiments at the heart of the story.
When Does Small Prophets Premiere on Apple TV?
Apple TV has confirmed that Small Prophets premieres on October 7, 2026, outside the United Kingdom. The UK availability follows a different schedule because the series originally premiered on BBC Two and BBC iPlayer earlier in 2026.
The Apple TV episode listings place the first two episodes on October 7, followed by weekly installments. The six-episode season is scheduled to conclude with Episode 6 on November 4.
That release strategy suits a series built around gradual discovery. The appeal of Small Prophets lies partly in watching an ordinary world become stranger one step at a time. Revealing every answer at once would undermine the curiosity that makes the premise work.
Why the Trailer Stands Out
The most interesting aspect of Small Prophets is its refusal to separate comedy from melancholy. Michael’s search begins with loss, but the story surrounds that sadness with eccentric characters, awkward situations and an increasingly bizarre experiment.
The trailer suggests a show interested in the small details of life: a workplace, a family connection, a suspicious neighbor and a homemade laboratory hidden in a shed. Those details give the supernatural premise a tangible foundation.
For Apple TV viewers, Small Prophets arrives as a distinctly British comedy with fantasy and mystery woven into its everyday setting. The official trailer makes the series look less like a traditional supernatural adventure and more like a character-driven story about hope, uncertainty and the strange lengths people will go to find an answer.
With Mackenzie Crook behind the camera and a cast led by Pearce Quigley, the series has a clear creative identity before its Apple TV debut. The trailer leaves one question hanging over everything else: if the future can really be predicted, what happens when the answer concerns someone who vanished years ago?
Final Thought
Small Prophets looks set to turn an ordinary missing-person mystery into something wonderfully strange, mixing heartfelt emotion, British comedy, and supernatural intrigue. With its unusual premise and offbeat charm, the series could offer a refreshing twist on the modern mystery genre.
