Netflix is bringing one of the Netherlands’ most notorious kidnapping cases to the screen with Toos: The Van der Valk Kidnapping, a Dutch crime drama inspired by the real-life abduction of Toos van der Valk in 1982. The official trailer introduces a world of family wealth, public attention and growing fear, as a seemingly secure life gives way to an extraordinary fight for survival.
Starring Lies Visschedijk and Frank Lammers, the upcoming Netflix series revisits a case that gripped the Netherlands for weeks. With its combination of historical events, family drama and crime-thriller tension, the production offers viewers a closer look at the personal cost of a kidnapping that became a national story.
The series is scheduled to premiere worldwide on Netflix on November 26, 2026. The date carries particular significance: it marks 44 years since Toos was abducted. Netflix confirmed the release date and revealed its first look at the series.
What Is Toos: The Van der Valk Kidnapping About?
At the centre of the story is Toos van der Valk, who, alongside her husband Gerrit, helped build the Van der Valk family’s successful hotel business. Their world revolves around family, business and the stability that comes with years of hard work. That security disappears when Toos is kidnapped on November 26, 1982.
The abduction triggers a desperate search, placing enormous pressure on her husband, children and the wider family. As the days pass, the case attracts intense media attention, while ransom demands and difficult decisions complicate efforts to bring Toos home safely.
One of the story’s most intriguing elements is police officer Cor Mulder’s undercover approach. He moves into Hotel Nuland, where the family is staying, and poses as “nephew Cor” while attempting to uncover information about the kidnappers. His role involves more than investigating a crime; he must also navigate a family struggling to cope with uncertainty.
Meanwhile, Toos faces the terrifying reality of captivity. The resulting twenty-day ordeal creates the central tension of this Dutch Netflix crime drama, balancing the investigation with the emotional experience of the people caught inside it.
What the Official Netflix Trailer Reveals
The trailer establishes a striking contrast between outward comfort and sudden danger. One moment suggests the polished social world surrounding the Van der Valk family; another shows masked captors, a frightened hostage and the threat of violence.
That contrast gives the story its emotional foundation. Rather than relying solely on the mystery of who committed the crime, the series explores what happens when a family loses control of the life it has built.
The footage also points towards a tense atmosphere, where every conversation and decision may carry consequences. The family’s search, the police investigation and Toos’s struggle for survival form three connected strands of the narrative.
The trailer cannot reveal every detail of the series, but it establishes the stakes clearly: time is running out, the pressure is mounting, and bringing Toos home will require persistence under extraordinary circumstances.
Toos: The Van der Valk Kidnapping Cast
Lies Visschedijk leads the cast as Toos van der Valk, while Frank Lammers portrays her husband, Gerrit van der Valk. Their performances anchor a story that depends on the relationship between a kidnapped woman and the family desperate to find her.
The supporting cast includes Gijs Blom as Joep van den Nieuwenhuijzen, Joy Verberk as Marijke van der Valk, Richelle Plantinga as Carlita van der Valk, Jim Deddes as Harry Heinrichs and Juda Goslinga as detective Cor Mulder.
Inti Calfat and Dirk Verheye direct the series, with Maaik Krijgsman and Carl Joos responsible for the writing. Dutch production company Submarine produces the drama.
The creative team’s challenge is to turn a widely reported historical case into compelling television without losing sight of the people whose lives were changed by it.
The True Story Behind the Netflix Series
To understand the significance of this release, it helps to separate the historical case from its television adaptation.
Toos van der Valk was kidnapped on November 26, 1982, and held in Belgium. Her official website records that she was released on December 17, 1982, after a ransom was paid. The case remains an important chapter in the history of the Van der Valk family.
Netflix describes its production as a drama inspired by these events, not a documentary. That distinction matters: dramatic adaptations can reconstruct conversations, shape timelines and introduce fictionalised elements to tell a coherent story.
The family’s own website also explains the series’ connection to the real events. Readers interested in the historical background can visit the official Toos van der Valk website for additional context.
Approaching the story with this distinction in mind allows audiences to appreciate the drama while recognising that the real kidnapping involved people whose experiences extend beyond what a television series can show.
Netflix Release Date and What Viewers Can Expect
Toos: The Van der Valk Kidnapping is schedule to arrive on Netflix worldwide on November 26, 2026. The planned release date connects the series directly to the anniversary of the original abduction.
For viewers who enjoy true-story-inspired crime dramas, the series brings together a historical mystery, an undercover investigation and a family under intense emotional strain. Its Dutch setting also offers an opportunity to explore a major criminal case beyond the familiar stories often associated with American and British television.
The most compelling question is not simply whether the investigation will succeed. It is how the family holds together while facing uncertainty, public scrutiny and the possibility of losing someone it loves.
Readers can find official updates and availability information through the Netflix title page.
Final Thought
The Toos: The Van der Valk Kidnapping official trailer introduces a tense, emotionally driven Netflix drama built around a real event that shocked the Netherlands. Lies Visschedijk and Frank Lammers lead a story that connects a family’s private anguish with a public criminal investigation.
Its historical foundation gives the series added weight, while the distinction between documented events and dramatic interpretation remains essential. With its November 26, 2026 release date, the production invites viewers to revisit a disturbing chapter of Dutch history through the lens of crime drama.
