The latest Paper Tiger official trailer introduces a tense, character-driven crime drama built around family, ambition and consequences. Written and directed by James Gray, the 2026 film brings together Adam Driver, Miles Teller and Scarlett Johansson for a story that places an ordinary family under extraordinary pressure.
According to distributor NEON, Paper Tiger is scheduled to open in U.S. theaters on November 13, 2026, with the film running approximately 115 minutes.
What immediately separates the movie from a conventional gangster thriller is its emphasis on the emotional cost of getting involved with the wrong people. The trailer suggests that the real danger is not simply the criminal world itself, but what that world does to trust, loyalty and family relationships.
A Crime Story Rooted in Family
At the center of Paper Tiger are two brothers whose attempt to pursue a better life takes them somewhere far more dangerous than expected. NEON’s official synopsis describes them becoming entangled in a scheme that initially appears too good to be true before their involvement with the Russian mafia begins putting their family at risk.
That premise gives the film an interesting dramatic foundation. Rather than presenting crime as an isolated adventure, James Gray appears to be using the genre to explore how one decision can spread through an entire family.
The trailer’s restrained atmosphere reinforces that idea. Conversations, uneasy encounters and moments of personal tension carry as much weight as the more threatening elements. There is a sense that the characters are gradually realizing that they have entered a situation they cannot easily control.
What the Paper Tiger Trailer Reveals
The Paper Tiger trailer establishes a world where appearances can be misleading. The promise of opportunity gradually becomes connected to corruption and danger, creating the central tension of the story.
The film is set in 1986 New York, and that period setting is an important part of its identity. Film at Lincoln Center describes the story as unfolding in Queens and Brooklyn, with the brothers becoming involved in a questionable deal connected to Russian criminals.
The trailer also points toward a conflict between personal responsibility and family loyalty. One brother’s choices have consequences for the other, making their relationship an important emotional engine for the narrative.
This is where Paper Tiger looks particularly intriguing. The criminal operation may provide the plot, but the consequences inside the household appear to provide the emotional core.
Adam Driver, Miles Teller and Scarlett Johansson Lead the Cast
The film’s central trio gives the project considerable dramatic weight. NEON officially lists Adam Driver, Scarlett Johansson and Miles Teller among the principal cast.
Driver plays Gary Pearl, while Teller portrays his brother Irwin Pearl. Johansson plays Hester Pearl, Irwin’s wife. The New York Film Festival describes Irwin as a family man pursuing middle-class stability before becoming caught up in his brother’s dangerous dealings.
That family structure makes the casting especially significant. The story requires performances capable of communicating affection, frustration and fear without turning every moment into obvious melodrama.
The trailer suggests that the film will spend considerable time observing the characters rather than simply rushing from one crime sequence to another.
James Gray Returns to Familiar Territory
James Gray has repeatedly explored crime, family and the darker side of the American dream throughout his filmmaking career. Paper Tiger continues that creative interest while moving into a period story centered on family pressure and criminal entanglement.
The film premiered in competition at the 2026 Cannes Film Festival, where the official festival listing identifies Gray as both director and screenwriter. Cannes also lists the film’s 115-minute runtime and its principal cast.
The movie was subsequently selected to open the 64th New York Film Festival, giving it a prominent position on the fall film calendar. Film at Lincoln Center describes it as a New York story set in 1986 and emphasizes its focus on the consequences of a family’s involvement with criminal forces.
That festival history provides useful context for audiences discovering the film through the new trailer: Paper Tiger is being positioned as a serious theatrical crime drama rather than a straightforward action movie.
The American Dream Meets Its Darker Side
One of the strongest themes visible in the film’s premise is the complicated idea of the American Dream. The brothers are not simply entering the criminal world for excitement. Their pursuit of opportunity appears to be connected to ordinary aspirations security, money and a better future.
That makes their downfall more personal.
The title Paper Tiger itself suggests something that may look powerful but proves vulnerable under pressure. Whether that idea ultimately applies to the characters, their ambitions or the criminal structure surrounding them remains one of the film’s central questions.
The trailer wisely leaves much of that unanswered.
Paper Tiger Release Date and What to Expect
NEON currently lists Paper Tiger for a November 13, 2026 theatrical release. Some listings also reference a broader November 20 rollout, following the initial limited release.
With its period setting, crime-drama framework and focus on family relationships, the film appears designed for audiences who prefer character-driven thrillers with a slower-burning dramatic approach.
The Paper Tiger official trailer ultimately works because it does not reveal everything. Instead, it establishes a dangerous situation, introduces the family at its center and leaves viewers wondering how far one bad decision can travel.
For fans of James Gray, Adam Driver, Miles Teller, Scarlett Johansson and serious crime cinema, Paper Tiger is a theatrical release worth keeping on the radar this November.
Final Thought
Paper Tiger looks like a gripping crime drama where family loyalty, ambition, and dangerous choices collide. With James Gray behind the camera and a strong cast led by Adam Driver, Miles Teller, and Scarlett Johansson, the film promises a tense, character-driven story that could leave audiences thinking long after the credits roll.
